The Youth Forum is an incentive organised by Lake Macquarie Council to give young people an opportunity to voice their concerns and enable positive changes for the area in which they live. We had 10 students from MHS who are concerned about the welfare of young people between the ages of 12 and 24 in the Southlakes area attend this forum. With the help from Regan who is based at Southlakes Community we were able to transport our enterprising students, free of charge, to this event.
During the introduction we learnt that there are approx 24000 young people who live in Lake MAC. This number will only increase due to the massive amount of new estates being built. Lake MAC is bigger in area and population to Newcastle. With the help of the other 7 schools in attendance the students, in groups of mixed schools, started to brainstorm on options for creativity, mobility and accessibility, lifestyle and wellbeing, shared decision making, diverse economy, connected community, unique landscapes.
The students heard about opportunities from the Scouts, Lake mc youth advisory council, the Bright Minds Project, hunter Intrepid Landcare, Hunter Futurepreneurs.
It was an inspiring day for the students as it gave them an opportunity to discuss events that affect them and having a voice in trying to make their community a better place.
