Community Access

Community Access Program

The Community Access Program provides students the opportunity to participate in real world experiences that complement learning undertaken at school. It is an integral part of students' individual education plans and involves students leaving the school grounds to develop knowledge and skills in the wider community.

Students visit locations and services such as local libraries, museums and art galleries, shopping centres, banks, cinemas, parks, local swimming pool, beaches, PCYCs and restaurants.

Students develop skills in:

Independent travel using public transport, including:

  • Planning a trip using timetables and personal scheduling
  • Purchasing tickets
  • Appropriate behaviour and situational awareness

Participating in community events and activities, including:

  • Identifying upcoming events of interest
  • Identifying specific services and facilities within the community and when or why you would access them
  • Establishing links with community providers, e.g. PCYC, Community Links Day
  • Developing confidence to ‘give it a go' or ask for help
  • Developing team skills, e.g. negotiating, co-operating, assertiveness, communicating
  • Developing interpersonal skills
  • Developing confidence in belonging to your community

Confidence in purchasing:

  • Ordering and choosing a payment method
  • Completing payment via cash or card
  • Determining value and cost for items
  • Interpreting advertising
