Focus on safety, respect and responsibility when travelling to school

Please see below a letter from Morisset High School Principal, Darren Brailey, reinforcing the responsibility of students to follow safety expectations and travel directly to school from home, and to enter the school site as soon as they arrive at school.

Dear MHS families,

At Morisset High School we pride ourselves on strong community and business partnerships, which benefit our students with opportunities and support for their learning.  Unfortunately, our school has received several complaints from local businesses about the negative and disrespectful behaviour of students' in the Morisset Square shopping center before and after school.

Respect, responsibility, and safety are cornerstones of student expectations at MHS. The safety of our students is paramount. When students follow expectations, their families and the school know that they are safe. When students leave home for school, families and the school expect that they will be responsible, and make positive choices.

EXPECTATIONS FOR ARRIVING AT SCHOOL - WHAT WE NEED FROM OUR FAMILIES

All students should head DIRECTLY ONTO THE SCHOOL GROUNDS, and NOT LEAVE the school grounds to visit the shops or stop at the shops on the way to school.

There is no reason why any student should be at the shops before, or during school unless they have permission from their parents or carers. Families provide lunch and snacks for students. Our school has a canteen and The Hub can provide food for students who have not brought food from home.

Our school is working with local businesses to ensure MHS students act responsibly and respectfully when in the shopping centre. Our Deputy Principals and I have increased our visibility in front of the school, and at the shopping centre, to remind students of their responsibility to head directly onto the school grounds when they arrive at school. Students who are seen heading towards the shopping centre after arriving at school will be told to turn around and enter the school grounds.

We are repeating this message at the morning roll call and will contact home if students fail to meet expectations. If a student leaves the school grounds without permission, they will be marked as truant and we will follow our attendance procedures.

We need your support to ensure your children follow expectations for their safety. Can I please ask you to sit down and have a conversation with your children about your expectations of their behaviour when they are travelling to and from school, and contact the school on (02) 4973 1999 if you have any questions.

Kind regards,

Darren Brailey,

Proud Principal, Morisset High School
